Job Shadowing
Vision Statement:
To create learning experiences for high school students, exposing them to the World of Work through job shadowing in careers within their chosen pathway.
To enable students to pursue further educational and occupational opportunities.
Confidentiality issues will be handled
individually by each business
as deemed appropriate.

Job Shadowing!
Students
can benefit from job shadowing in many ways. Job shadowing helps students understand the connection between classroom learning and their future career plans. Job shadowing allows students to see firsthand what a job involves, and can foster excitement and interest in various careers.
Parents
are better able to help their child with career planning when the student takes an active role in exploring what options are available.
Schools
can use Job Shadowing as an important component of their career exploration curriculum.
Businesses
can benefit from Job Shadowing programs by meeting and interacting with potential employees, and sparking career interests in students.

Students…
- Identify career pathway and preferred job shadowing experiences.
- Arrange for transportation to and from the business.
- Give school contact person signed permission form at least 24 hours prior to the job shadowing experience.
- Dress appropriately for the business.
- Be on time!
- Call business and school contact at least 24 hours in advance if a conflict arises.
- Follow proper procedure for leaving school building during school hours.
- Report to school contact person following the experience & complete the evaluation.
- Send note of thanks to the business.
Parents…
- Read and discuss the materials from the school regarding your child’s career plans.
- Encourage your child to explore job shadowing opportunities.
- Give permission.
- Encourage your child to attend the job shadowing experience on time, and to dress appropriately.
- Discuss the job shadowing experience and the need for continued career exploration with your child.
- Call the school contact person listed on the brochure with any questions or ideas.

Schools…
- Encourage job shadowing as a valuable learning experience.
- Provide a contact person to coordinate schedules, and provide guidance and follow-up.
- Prior to job shadowing experience, prepare students by providing career guidance.
- Inform parents/guardians about job shadowing experiences and secure permission.
- Integrate experience into classroom learning.
- Summarize evaluations from students and businesses. Adjust procedures to reflect evaluation results.
Businesses…
- Provide a safe learning environment facilitated by hands-on and/or observational experiences (1-4 hours).
- The student is an unpaid observer.
- Provide a contact person to meet the student and guide them throughout the experience.
- If available, provide printed material about your business.
- To cancel or change a scheduled experience, please notify school contact person and/or student at least 24 hours in advance.
- Complete and return an evaluation after each job shadowing experience.
